I've been tracking it for two days. No pattern I can see. It left once while I was standing in it, which was a new experience. One second I'm measuring wall space, next second I'm standing in the hallway facing a flat wall with a tape measure extended into drywall. The tape measure was fine, by the way. It was just pressed against the wall. The room took nothing with it that wasn't part of the room.
